Clearing 2026 — live
Top academic universities in the UK
The highest-ranked UK universities in the Guardian University Guide. Several of these appear in Clearing most years — a strong league-table position does not mean the door is closed.
What the Guardian ranking measures
The Guardian University Guide weights teaching quality, student feedback, spend per student, graduate employment outcomes and the gap between entry grades and final degree results. Unlike some tables it excludes research output, which makes it a closer proxy for the undergraduate experience than for institutional prestige.
Understanding academic rankings
UK universities are ranked using multiple metrics including teaching quality, student satisfaction, graduate employment rates, research quality, and student-to-staff ratios. The Guardian University Guide, Times Higher Education, and Complete University Guide each use slightly different methodologies.
The Guardian University Guide measures satisfaction with teaching, satisfaction with assessment and feedback, student-to-staff ratio, expenditure per student, average entry tariff, value added score, career prospects after 15 months, and continuation rates. It focuses on the student experience rather than research metrics.
Major UK university rankings are typically updated annually. The Guardian publishes in September, Times Higher Education World Rankings in October, and the Complete University Guide in June. Rankings can change significantly year-to-year based on updated data.
While rankings provide useful information, they shouldn't be your only consideration. Also consider the specific course content, location, campus facilities, student support services, accommodation options, and whether the university culture suits your learning style and goals.
Rankings are a starting point, not the answer
League tables aggregate across an entire institution. In Clearing, what matters is the specific course, whether it has places, and whether they will take your grades. Use this list to build a shortlist, then call.
